The holiday season is considered by many to be the most stressful time of the year. To help the public get through this season, Mustang Creek Estates of Sachse is hosting a free educational event on how to navigate the holidays with a senior loved one on December 11 at 6 p.m. at the senior living community (3900 Ranch Road in Sachse). Brittany Miller, MS, LPC, LCDC, business development representative at Garland Behavioral Hospital, will discuss important topics such as navigating the different emotions sparked by the holidays, modifying traditions to meet the needs of senior family members, and more. Guests will have the chance to enjoy light appetizers and some holiday cheer in the brand new senior living community. In addition, Mustang Creek Estates of Sachse is asking the public to bring donations to help area seniors. They are requesting canned food items for Stop Senior Hunger.
“We are thrilled about the opportunity to host our very first community event and support seniors in the greater community through a meaningful donation drive,” said Sharon Flowers, executive director of Mustang Creek Estates of Sachse. “We understand that the holiday season can be difficult for many people, and that’s why we decided to host this informative event. We are thankful to have a knowledgeable speaker like Brittany Miller share useful tips on how to handle the holiday stress and challenges better.”
Seniors might require more assistance or they may have difficulty transitioning to their family’s house, so families may need to modify existing traditions or create new ones. It is important to plan the holidays accordingly and have necessary conversations – especially with children – about the health or abilities of loved ones. We have to decide how we want to explain that their grandmother or grandfather might not be in the best shape to visit their family. Miller will put an emphasis on having discussions with caregivers about loved ones before planning the holidays, and she will answer questions the guests may have about successfully navigating the holiday season.
“I am honored Mustang Creek Estates of Sachse invited me to talk about such an important topic, and I am happy they understand the benefits of holding this event to help the local community plan in advance for the holidays,” said Miller. “There’s no better time than now to remind the families that they are not in this alone. Sometimes the holidays put so much weight on us, and I am glad I can help them lift it.”
