Library announces end of summer reading program
SACHSE (July 22, 2016) The end of the summer program is within sight at the Sachse Library, and this year, the closing event will include its own scent as well.
“The annual summer reading program closes on Thursday, July 28,” says Mignon Morse, Library Manager. “The closing event will be highlighted by everyone’s favorite - a petting zoo.”
The petting zoo will accommodate visitors from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. And while the animals will be penned outdoors, gaining access to the petting area will require participants to line up inside the library. “Participants who want to, can get their faces painted while waiting in line,” she said.
That day will also see the awarding of prizes for the annual summer reading challenge. Deadline for submission of reading logs is Saturday, July 23.
On Wednesday, July 27, the final summer movie will be shown at 2 p.m. The feature is “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
The end of the summer program does not mean the end of library programming, however, as August is full of events and activities for all ages.
For example, a Mo Willems Celebration is set for Thursday, Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. Fans of Willems’ characters can answer some important questions, such as “Would you let the pigeon drive the bus? Is there a bird on your head? Do you know where Knuffle Bunny is?” The library staff will help children find the answers.
Parents of young children will want to circle Aug. 9 on their calendars. Lauren McKinney, Family and Community Engagement Consultant for Region 10, will address library patrons at 6 p.m.
The program, called “Literacy with Lauren,” will discuss how early literacy and the development of foundational skills are directly linked to student success in later years. McKinney will review the Five Essential Components of Reading, as noted by the National Reading Panel, and she will share tips on how to help children become readers. Materials and resources will be provided.
All programs are free and open to the public. More information is available at The Sachse Library Facebook page also carries a full listing of activities.
